Claim. Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s task mode beside Chat. It works in folders and tools you choose, can run scheduled tasks in the cloud, and has a built-in browser in the desktop app.
Method. claude.com/product/cowork, read 2 October 2026. The page still presents Cowork next to Chat rather than as a merged label.

Claim. Computer use is described on that page as a research preview. Claude asks before it uses each application and reaches for connectors before it drives the screen.
Method. FAQ on the same product page. Do not describe unattended desktop control as a finished feature.

Claim. A local document agent at 27B Q4 needs about 18.2 GB. Muse Glimmer, if screenshots matter, is a 20 GB Q4 estimate or Meta’s ~17 GB K-quant.

— parameter math, quantization bytes, and the source list.
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s mode for handing Claude a goal instead of a chat turn. The product page says you find it next to Chat. Cowork reads and writes files in folders you choose, uses connectors, schedules tasks that keep running with the laptop closed, and can split a job across pieces that run together. Help for getting started is at support.claude.com. Computer-use behavior is described in the computer-use article.
Honest limits from their own FAQ
Cowork on the page runs on desktop, with web and mobile in beta. The desktop app is what reaches folders and applications on your computer. A built-in Cowork browser, separate from your own tabs, is listed for the desktop app on Pro, Max, and Team, with Enterprise admins managing it. Deleting files needs approval. Computer use is a research preview: connectors first, browser next, your screen last, and permission before each application. I am not going to tell you to leave it unattended on a logged-in desktop. The page also says agentic tasks burn rate limit faster than chat. Plan prices are printed there and change; I am not copying the dollar amounts into this guide.
Cowork is knowledge work. Claude Code is the coding product. If your task is a pull request, you are in the wrong comparison — look at Cursor Cloud Agents and Aider. Cowork’s examples are decks, spreadsheets, contract memos, and call-note summaries.
A local desktop agent, with the brakes on
The local substitute is a pile of tools, and that is fine if you say so.
OpenHands Agent Canvas or the CLI, against a local model. Their docs mark the old Docker Local GUI as deprecated. Use the current client.
browser-use with Playwright when the task is a website. That is the analogue of Cowork’s side-panel browser, without Perplexity’s or Anthropic’s index.
Open Interpreter for terminal actions. Current docs describe a sandbox and an approval mode. Leave the approval mode on.
Ollama or LM Studio as the backend, and Open WebUI if you want a chat front door that is not the coding UI.
A 7B model can rename files and draft a short note. It is a poor contract reviewer. For the jobs Cowork shows — multi-document memos, spreadsheets with a variance flag — load a 27–32B Q4, or Muse Glimmer if the agent must read screenshots. Local 7B is not Claude.
Memory for the local half
Cowork’s cloud session does not use your GPU. The replacement does. Q4_K_M site formula: params × 0.6 + 2. Confirm context on the VRAM calculator.

Macs, because the files are already there
Cowork’s desktop value is the folder on the machine you already use. The local version has the same shape on a Mac: MLX or llama.cpp, files in place. The Mac mini M5 Pro 24 GB (B0HGGHNQY6, $1,669.99 on 1 October 2026) holds a 7B easily and a 27B tightly. The Studio M5 Max 36 GB (B0HGKSQMX6, $2,449) is the one I would use for a document agent you leave running. Neither one is Cowork. Both are the hardware side of “the files never left the house.”
